Futurama did a similar joke once upon a time. Bender is trying to be rescued from an island and runs out of rocks as he is spelling out "Help" or something like that (I can't find the reference online. Then it zooms out to show he's written something along the lines of "Greetings, My name is Bender, you may have heard of me, or maybe not, anyway, the important thing is that I am trapped on this island and need hel_"

I've never read him on paper. I did listen to an essay audiobook, and I remember that he did footnotes in a different voice, and at the start of the audiobook, he made a little speech about which voice he was going to use for the footnote part. Makes a lot of sense to me now. :)
