Righto, so I'm going to board a plane tomorrow morning to head out to El Paso, Texas. For Thanksgiving with the boyfriend's family. It's a good thing I discovered my "male film icon" self is John Wayne (see post from earlier today). That should come in handy.

Am attempting to rid myself of preconceived notions and assumptions about Texans in preparation for the trip. It's hard to do when you're actually related to some not-great examples of Texan insanity. Of course if I judged the world based on what I know about my family we'd all be in trouble, so I'll try my best to have an open mind. I'd rather not project my own crazy dysfunction on a group of completely innocent people.

Happy Thanksgiving to those of you that celebrate it.

My across-the-street neighbor and law school chum is also going to Texas for the holidays. (ZOMG perhaps you'll see each other!!) She has similar apprehension. She is from Wisconsin and has never been there before.

Just recall my convo with a friend about El Paso. "Dude, over the border from Juarez? You have all the cheap hookers and speed you could want within an arm's reach!!"

Good luck with all of that! It's funny, I'm always hearing about Austin and I'm continually surprised at what a cool, liberal-sounding town it seems like...

From what I've heard, the annoying parts of Texas are Dallas, San Antonio, Houston (especially), and all the smaller cities in Eastern Texas or up by Oklahoma. The one exception being Austin (which, like antarcticlust, I've heard has become a pretty cool, liberal town in the past decade or so.) West Texas is a different ballgame. A friend of mine lives across the border from Lubbock in Eastern New Mexico and says that the whole annoying redneck-cowboy-Southerner attitude is far less pronounced in that region. El Paso on the other hand is halfway to Arizona. Long story short: it's practically not even in Texas, hence no typical Texas bullshit. From what I've heard anyway.
